The future of the EMU Notes in Mineralogy series

Book publishing has changed profoundly over the past decade, with obvious consequences for the publication of the EMU Notes in Mineralogy series. Despite open access, the volumes don’t appear to attract as much attention as previously. It’s also becoming increasingly difficult to find people willing to serve as editors for books in the series. The most recent volume, #21, entitled ‘Chemical Geodynamics of the Earth’s mantle: New Paradigms’ was published in 2024 and displayed at the EMC meeting in Dublin. Since then, the EMU Executive Committee and Council have been struggling to find a path to the next volume.

With this in mind, the EMU council seeks input from member societies about their expectations or suggestions for the future of this book series ahead of the next EMU council meeting to be scheduled in spring 2026. We would be grateful if you could complete the survey and encourage members of your national societies to do so also. This will help to guide us in terms of making decisions about how the EMU can best serve those who belong to the international mineralogical community.
